Jake Shields officially signs with the UFC, faces Martin Kampmann at UFC 121

Jake Shields will make his long awaited UFC debut this October at UFC 121 against Martin Kampmann, as Shields announced on Twitter today that he has officially signed his UFC contract.

Shields was released from his Strikeforce contract a few weeks ago after negotiations, such as they were, fell through. Shields, through his actions, had made it clear that the UFC was his likely destination, and in turn UFC President Dana White talked on many occasions about bringing him into the Octagon.

When the two appeared side by side on April's "Aldo vs. Faber" pay-per-view event after Shields defeated Dan Henderson on CBS the week before, it was a clear sign that the UFC was where he was headed, and it was merely a matter of time before this contract was signed.

He will now meet Martin Kampmann at UFC 121 on October 23, as in addition to announcing his signing he mentioned that the fight would be coming to California. UFC 121 will emanate from the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., and will be headlined by a UFC Heavyweight Championship bout between Brock Lesnar and Cain Velasquez.
